Outpainting
Outpaint enlarges the canvas in any direction and fills the new area by continuing the original image. The original part doesn’t change at all. It’s suited to turning a portrait image into a landscape one, or filling in background that was cropped off.
Basic steps
Section titled “Basic steps”- Choose “Outpaint” as the refine mode.
- Under “Extend by”, choose “Ratio” or “Custom”.
- The enlarged canvas is previewed on the right; “Show extend area” shows the area to be filled (checkered).
- Choose the amount of change and press “Redraw”.
Extend by
Section titled “Extend by”| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Ratio | Choose a target aspect ratio (1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and so on) and, under “Original at”, where the original sits (left / center / right, top / center / bottom) |
| Custom | Enter how many pixels to add on the top, bottom, left and right |
Amount of change
Section titled “Amount of change”| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Subtle | The extension follows the edge colours more closely; joins reliably but the content is plainer |
| Moderate | Continues the original and adds new content (recommended) |
| Strong | The extension is completely redrawn; the richest content, but more likely to not join up |
Prompt
Section titled “Prompt”The extended area follows the prompt:
- Add what you’d like to see more of (for example
sky, sea). - If an extra person appears beside the subject, try removing the tags that describe the main character.
Large canvases
Section titled “Large canvases”If the enlarged canvas exceeds about 1.5 megapixels, it is generated smaller and then enlarged, so the extension looks softer. You can add detail afterwards with Upscaling.
Smoother seams
Section titled “Smoother seams”With SDXL-family models you can turn on “Smoother seams” so the extension joins more naturally and unrelated things are less likely to appear (see Inpainting).
Supported models
Section titled “Supported models”Every architecture that supports inpainting can outpaint: the SDXL family, Anima, Z-Image, Krea 2, Qwen Image 2.1 and FLUX.
